  1. BoilBoil the cabbage and peeled potatoes together 25 minutes until very soft, then drain well.
  2. CrushMash them roughly together, leaving some texture, and season.
  3. Fry the baconCrisp the bacon with the garlic in the oil and lift most of it out.
  4. Form the cakePress the mash into the hot fat and fry 6 minutes a side until a brown crust forms.
  5. ServeTop with the crisp bacon and garlic.
